Above Ground Pool Filters

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to recognize the fact that all pools require an efficient filtering system regardless of whether they are above or below ground pools. However, the fact remains that these filtering systems are even more integral for above ground pools than they are for regular below ground pools. Above ground pool filters are what keep such pools from turning stagnant and slimy.

They accomplish this by ensuring that the water is constantly circulated, unwanted debris is filtered and separated, that chlorine is adequately distributed and that tiny particles are removed through filtration. Since these are the very things that ensure a clean and hygienic pool, it becomes plain to see why you need to put some thought into the purchase of above ground pool filters.

There are basically three types of above ground pool filters to choose from – Cartridge, Diatomaceous Earth and Sand filters. Let’s take a quick look at how each of these above ground pool filters work.

  1. Cartridge filters: These filters make use of a form of paper to filter out debris and particulates. Though in the past these filters called for tedious maintenance procedures, recent changes in their structure and size have made them easier to maintain, requiring just one or two cleanings annually. What’s more, the replacement cartridges don’t cost too much making them cost-effective options.

  2. Diatomaceous Earth filters: These DE filters are considered to be the best in the market as they’re capable of filtering particulates as small as 5 to 8 microns. The filter consists of plastic covered grids that are coated with a generous layer of diatomaceous earth. These being finer than sand, they are able to trap much smaller particles.

  3. Sand Filters: These are on par with Cartridge filters as they’re good for trapping particles that are not smaller in size than 40 microns. Water entering the filter passes through a layer of sand on the bottom that traps the particles while the clean water moves on through the laterals back to the pool.

This is how the whole system works in tandem. The water flows towards the skimmer which is a big container located on the outside and comes with a basket like structure where large-sized debris is trapped. On leaving the large debris behind, the water passes through to the pump and from there into the filter where it is relieved of all small particulates. The clean water then is passed back into the pool.

As noticed then, the pump works in conjunction with the above ground pool filters to ensure a clean and clear pool. In order to ensure long-lasting and efficient filtering, make it stand at an elevation. If possible, create a level ground base on which you can set up the elevated filter. On a daily basis make sure you check and clean out your skimmer. At the same time take the time to ensure that the water level in your above ground pool is adequate. This should never fall below that of the skimmer which will then render both pump and filter absolutely useless and might even lead to the burning of the pump.
